The density of air is higher near the surface of the earth. As we move upwards from the surface of the earth, density of air keeps on decreasing. This increase in density as light rays come towards earth is the cause of refraction.

The refraction of light caused by the earth's atmosphere is called atmospheric refraction.
When the sun rays passing through the atmosphere suffer refraction known as atmospheric refraction.
It is caused by the difference is the dinsities of air in the differnt layes of the atmosphere.
Atmospheric refraction is a change in the refractive index of light waves or rays due to differences in elevation in atmospheric density.
