Cavour
An innovative agriculturalist and civil servant in Piedmont (Kingdom of Sardinia), Cavour (1810-1861) played a central role in the unification of Italy. As the following review of a book On Railroads in Italy makes clear, however, nationalism did not mean the same thing for him as it did for Mazzini. The "distinguished and brilliant monarch" praised by Cavour, King Charles Albert of Piedmont, suffered two disastrous defeats when he sought to unify Italy by declaring war on Austria in 1848 and again in 1849. Cavour served Charles Albert's successor, Victor Emmanuel, as premier from 1852 until 1861, and patiently cultivated an alliance with France to expel Austria from the Italian peninsula. Opinions remain divided to this day as to whether he truly served the nationalist cause or merely sought to strengthen the state of Piedmont.
