because:
it is believed that that the cartridge of the Enfield Rifle had to bite off before use. but it's cartridge was made up of pork and beef. the Hindus could not eat a sacred animal like cow and the Muslims could not eat pork as they thought it to be impure. so the introduction of Enfield Rifle had upset the feelings of the Hindus and Muslims which were a major of the Indian population. they were against it.
this caused the revolt
