Explain compression and rarefaction with the help of a diagram.

As you can clearly see in the diagram, the upper part of the wavelength above the normal line is called compression and the part of wavelength below the normal line is called rarefaction.

  • Rarefactions as the name suggests have low density.
  • Compressions on the other hand have more density.

We have to explain the compression and rarefaction with the help of diagram.

Concepts :

  • There are basically two types of waves ; transverse and longitudinal.
  • When the particles move perpendicular to the direction of the propagation of wave is known as transverse. in this wave motion, extreme and mean positions are crest and trough respectively.
  • While longitudinal waves are those waves in which particle move parallel to the direction of propagation of wave. these waves have compressions and rarefactions instead of crests or troughs.

Compression : It is the region of a longitudinal wave where particles are the closest together. In other way, you can say it is the region of a longitudinal wave where the pressure will be the highest . in figure, compression is clearly shown.

Rarefaction : It is the region of a longitudinal wave where the particles are the farthest apart from each other. In other way, you can say that it is the region where the pressure will be the lowest. In figure, rarefaction is clearly shown.
