I assume you are talking about linear momentum.

Answer:

Conservation of momentum is a fundamental law of physics which states that the momentum of a system is constant if there are no external forces acting on the system

Explanation:

according to newtons second law :

F = \frac{dp}{dt}

when there is no external force

\frac{dp}{dt} = 0

so momentum p = constant (if no external force is applies)

momentum is product of mass and velocity

Example :

recoil : bullet and gun.

Initially bullet and gun are stationary.

so total momentum is zero.

but when bullet is fired momentum is generated in direction of bullet velocity. To compensate this the gun is recoiled the momentum is in opposite direction in such way that the sum of momentum of gun and bullet becomes what was initially which is zero.

same is the case with rocket. the fuel goes out and rocket goes in other direction to conserve momentum.
