The Ganga Action Plan ( GAP) was launched on 14th January 1986 by the then Prime Minister Rajeev Gandhi for the aim of making Ganga free of pollution.
Explanation:
- The Ganga river basin is the largest river basin in India and one of the most fertile areas of the world.
- It also supports large number of human population along its banks, these had lead to innumerable source of pollution for Ganga as raw sewage was dumped directly to the river.
- There are large number of factories along the banks of Ganga and most of the untreated waste water is dumped to the river.
- Also, due to its position in Hindu mythology large number of funerals and pyres are burnt along the banks, and also large number of burnt of half burnt bodies were also thrown in the river. All of these has severely affected Ganga and the vivid ecosystem it supports.
- The GAP was launched to control these measures.
- The first objective was to control the non- point source of pollution which includes pollutants like phosphates, nitrates, etc which are mainly used as agricultural fertilizers, and passage of raw sewage, open defection, etc.
- The second objective was to create large number of Sewage Treatment Plants which can treat the raw sewage and after many levels of treatment the water would finally be passed to the river.
- It also suggested for the research and development for conservation of the biodiversity that the river supports, it included conservation of the Gangetic dolphins, turtles, etc.
- But unfortunately the words did not turned up into actions and even after spending crores of rupees, Ganga still remained polluted.
