Protozoans

  • Protozoans are primitive unicellular eukaryotic organisms.

  • They can be both free living and parasitic. Plasmodium is a parasitic protozoa.

  • They are heterotrophs, they derive their nutrition from the host organism.

  • Normally, they are found in saline water and rarely in freshwater bodies.

  • They reproduce asexually, binary fission incase of amoeba and multiple fission in case of plasmodium. They can also produce gametes, as plasmodium produces megasporocyte (ovum) and microsporocyte (sperm).

  • They are flagellated as seen in the case of trypanosoma.

  • Plasmodium are digenetic, they require two organisms to complete their lifecycle.

  • They causes diseases like malaria & amoebic dysentery in Humans.

Examples,

  • Plasmodium vivax
  • Plasmodium falciparum
  • Plasmodium ovale
  • Ameoba
  • Trypanosoma
