The sunlight is a white light which is made up of seven colours of the atmosphere i.e Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet.

The splitting of white light into its seven colours after passing through a prism is called dispersion.

Each drop of rain acts like a prism and splits the sunlight into seven colours.

Famous english scientist Issac Newton proposed this theory of splitting of light into seven colours as dispersion.

For more clarification of concept, I have attached an attatchment with my answer
