With the disappearance of the old aristocratic Zamindar and rulers the Indian artisans and craftsmen lost their patronage. Thousands of people who held administrative posts under the ruler who were now deposed lost their employment to. Loss of employment affected other who were dependent on these employees for their livelihood. Excessive taxation and recurrent famines ruined farmers, driving them to poverty and suffering. Corruption of police and petty official further aggravated their misery.

Displacement of Zamindars : Due to the new revenue reforms, many old aristocratic zamindars lost their right on land. Bentinck, too, introduced new land reform which dispossessed many zamidars. They had a common cause with the farmers and presents and offered a stiff resistance in many areas. Each section was fighting to regain lost privileges and power.
