Eutrophication. A major problem with the use of fertilisers occurs when they're washed off the land by rainwater into rivers and lakes. The resulting increase of nitrate or phosphate in the water encourages algae growth, which forms a bloom over the water surface.

Eutrophication is the pollution process in which water pollution leads to the improper functioning of water bodies as a result of which the oil, industrial acids or farm pesticides poison the aquatic plants and animals and the phosphates, detergents, chemical fertilisers and animal manure pollute the water by supplying excess nutrients for aquatic life.
