The fusion of haploid male gamete, sperm and haploid female gamete, ovum is called fertilization.

External fertilization

in most aquatic organisms such as algae and fishes as well as amphibians, syngamy occurs in the external medium, this type of gametic fusion is called external fertilization.

Internal fertilization

in many terrestrial organisms fungi , why animal such as reptiles birds mammals and plants such as pteridophytes ,gymnosperms and angiosperms; syngamy occur inside the body of the organism this type of grametic fusion is called internal fertilization.
