The following are the features of Federalism:
- The power is divided between a central authority and its various constituent units. There are two or more levels of government.
- Different tiers of the government govern the same citizens and each tier has its own jurisdiction in specific matters of legislation, taxation and administrative matters.
- The fundamental provisions of the constitution cannot be unilaterally changed by one level of government. Such changes require the consent of both the levels of government.
- It has dual objective to promote and safe guard the unity of the country and to accommodate regional diversity.
- Courts have the power to interpret the constitution. They acts as an umpire if a dispute arises between various levels of the government.
