In light of this, look at the formation of water from reaction of hydrogen and oxygen. Hydrogen gas burns in Oxygen and produces steam with some assoociated heat. When this steam condenses to form water, more heat is liberated. And hence, formation of liquid water is more exothermic than formation of steam.
