In organic chemistry, free-radical halogenation is a type of halogenation. This chemical reaction is typical of alkanes and alkyl-substituted aromatics under application of UV light. The reaction is used for the industrial synthesis of chloroform (CHCl3), dichloromethane(CH2Cl2), and hexachlorobutadiene. It proceeds by a free-radical chain mechanism.

Reaction of alkanes or anyother compound like alkene etc with chlorine in presence of light or high temperature results in the formation of chloroalkane.This is called as halogenation reaction of particular compound. Since the reactive intermediate involved in the reaction mechanics or attacking specie involve in the mechanism is free radical. Hence this reaction is known as free radical halogenation.

General reaction involved-
R-H + Cl2 -----> R-Cl
