In this variety of structural isomerism, the isomers contain different functional groups - that is, they belong to different families of compounds (different homologous series). For example, a molecular formula C3H6O could be either propanal (an aldehyde) or propanone (a ketone).

FUNCTIONAL GROUP ISOMERISM
having same molecular formula but different functional groups
EXAMPLE
CH3CH3OH AND CH3 O CH3

POSITION ISOMERISM
COMPOUNDS having same molecular formula but different in position of functional group or the position of a double or tripple bond on the carbon chain are called position isomers and phenomenon is called position isomerism.
EXAMPLE
1 BROMO PROPANE and 2 BROMO PROPANE
