Genetic code is the specific sequence of nucleotides in mRNA molecule which contain the information for the synthesis of protein molecule. It was discovered by frame shift mutation by Crick. Features of genetic code: The codons are triplet. Out of 64 codons, 61 code for amino acids & 3 codons( UAA,UGA, UAG) function as terminating codons.

It is unambiguous and specific. Some amino acids are coded by more than 1 codon, hence the code is degenerate. It is universal & without any punctuation. AUG is a dual function codon.( it codes for methionine & also acts as initiator codon)
