The increase in the global mean temperature of the earth (17°C) is known as global warming.

Causes:

Major cause of global warming is the increase in the amount of green house gases (like CO2) which trap the terrestrial radiation. Another cause is Ozone depletion which allow UV rays to enter that heat up the atmosphere up to a great extent.

Effects:

Due to global warming, the glaciers are melting, which has led to a rise in water level in seas and oceans and has caused a threat of submergence for coastal areas. It has also led to the death of temperature sensitive species, like the corals.
