Due to which, the mantle begins to deposit a substance called nacre on it. Nacre is composed of calcium carbonate, in the form of mineral aragonite and calcite. Gradually, note layers of nacre gets compiled upon the grains of sand which effectively walls it off from the oyster itself and forms a pearl of some shape.
Hence, grains of sand are converted into a pearl by the oyster.
