Explain how atmospheric refraction lenthen the duration of the day

When a ray of light passes through the atmosphere having layers of different densities and refractive indices, then refraction of light takes place (atmospheric refraction). The actual sunrise takes place when the sun is just above the horizon.

We know that sun seems to rise before the actual sunrise this is because of the atmospheric refraction.

And also the sun seems to set late after actual sun set this is also due to atmospheric refraction.

So clearly we can understand why due to atmospheric refraction day time lengthen.
