Bats have weak eyes, so they cannot observe their prey. They search out prey and fly in dark night through emitting and detecting reflections of ultrasonic waves. The high pitched ultrasonic squeaks of the bat are reflected from the obstacles or prey and return to bat's ear. The nature of reflections tells the bat where the obstacle or prey is. This way bats catch their prey with the help of ultrasound.

Bats, have special types of wings. When they fly they produce ultrasonic waves. These waves are received by the ears of bat after they have been reflected by the object. The ears of the bat are so sensitive and trained that they not only get information of distance of the obstacle but also that of the nature of the reflecting surface.
