The cells of fungi take up water due to osmosis and swell up as a result. This creates a pressure against it's cell wall. The cell wall also produces an equal and opposite pressure on the swollen cell. In this way they both cancel out each other's effects and thus the cell is able to withstand the dilute external media due to the presence of this cell wall.
