ab earth has mass everything in universe which has mass also as in gravitational field depending upon its mass the gravitational field or the gravity of the object present in the universe pull thing around it towards itselfthat is the reason when earth has a good amount of mass it can also have an atmosphere because anything surrounding Earth including gas is come together around Earth to form an atmosphere this atmosphere is also maintained by gravitational field of earth because the gravitational field resists it for the gaseous matter to leave Earth
The earth has an atmosphere because it has the gravity necessary to keep the gases from floating off into space. The more mass a planet has , the more gravity it has, the thicker an atmosphere it can sustain.
