Energy decreases as it moves up trophic levels because energy is lost as metabolic heat when the organisms from one trophic level are consumed by organisms from the next level. Trophic level transfer efficiency (TLTE) measures the amount of energy that is transferred between trophic levels.

The value of entropy will increase on moving on to the next levels in food chain.

Explanation:

  • Entropy is defined as the measure of heat that is available in any kind of system.
  • When moving towards the next levels in the food chain, the distribution of heat will be less at each stage and at the lower levels of food chain the heat energy that is produced will be high and the value of entropy will be less.
  • Thus on increasing levels of food chain, the value of entropy will increase and in the decreasing levels of food chain, the values if entropy will decrease.
