A male has XY gametes while the female has XX gametes. No matter what is the gender of the baby the mother contributes only the X gamete. If the X gamete of the male fusses, then the baby born is a girl. If the Y gamete fusses then the baby born is a boy.
Hence there are 50 % chances to either have a boy or a girl.

Explain how is the equal genetic contribution of male and female parents ensured in the progeny?
During the formation of gametes as a result of reductional division (meiosis), sperms - XY & eggs - XX receive only single genome of a parent.
When fertilization occurs, one genome each from sperm & egg reaches the zygote.
It means both male & female parents contribute exactly equal amount of genetic material to the offspring.
