After India got independence, the Portuguese were not ready to leave Goa neither did they acknowledge the claim of the Indian authorities. They went ahead and attached Indian vessels as well as boats that touched the Goan coast. The Indian government, however, did not tolerate the act; they, therefore, sent their troops to secure the territory from the Portuguese. The Portuguese were less in number, and the Indian government easily defeated them, and in 1961 they were absorbed by the Indian government and became part of Indians.
