Kabul became commercially and politically important in the 16th century because of two main reasons. First, it was an important point in the Silk Route and gateway to the Khyber Pass. Trade in horses was primarily carried on through this route. Camels carried dried fruits, dates, carpets, silks and fresh fruits from Kabul to the Indian subcontinent. It was also a centre for slave trade.
Secondly, its political importance increased after Babur’s invasion of India. It came under control of the Mughals.
