Let the no. of girls be x.

Then, no. of boys = x-8

Total number of children= 48

Therefore,

x+(x-8) = 48

=> x+x-8 =48

=> 2x -8 =48

=> 2x = 48 + 8

= 56

=> x = 56/2

= 28

Therefore,

Number of girls = x

= 28

Number of boys = x-8

= 28-8 =20
