when lighting will fall on the structure but the iron rod associated there will absorb the lighting and then through the wire connected to the iron rod the lighting will pass into the ground this, preventing any kind of damage.

The lightening conductor consists of a metallic rod which is connected to the earth. When lightening strikes, the rod attracts lightening towards it and the charge goes through the copper rod and gets buried deep inside the earth's surface. This is called Earthing. Thus this protects tall buildings.
