Lighter, positively charged particles form at the top of the cloud. Heavier, negatively charged particles sink to the bottom of the cloud. When the positive and negative charges grow large enough, a giant spark - lightning - occurs between the two charges within the cloud.

Lightning occurs due to some unknown scientific factors. Before rain, the lower parts of the clouds become positively charged. And due to some unknown factors, the air becomes negatively charged. The attraction of charges produces lightning. The scientists are making efforts to find out the causes of generation of charges in the atmosphere.
