Pea plants have bisexual or perfect flowers which are very likely to be self pollinated, as a result the recombination and hybrid generation are as good as impossible.
So, Mendel performed emasculation (removal of anthers during maturing stages of flower ) and artificially provided pollen from other plants of the same species and promoted cross pollination.
