The continuous cycle of muscle contractions and relaxations are used to produce locomotion in living organisms.

If we take the case of human locomotion, contraction and relaxation cycles of a muscle cause it to shorten and lengthen respectively. When a muscle shortens, it pulls the lower limb closer towards the joint, causing a movement in one direction.

Similarly, when it relaxes, the lower muscle is pushed away from the body creating an opposing movement. Using these two cycles, any muscle is able to move back and forth, which in turn, moves the limbs they control.
