Because the male gametes and female gametes have 23 chromosomes so after fertilisation they become 46.

There are 22 pairs of autosomes.but there 1 pair of sex chromosomes.If the male gamete gives X chromosomes then the offsprings receive son child and if female gamete gives Y chromosomes then the offsprings receive daughter child.
