Digestion of food is defined as a biochemical process in which complex food is made simple by the help of enzymes .it is also a catabolic or destructive process by which complex non-diffusable food materials are converted into dimple, diffusable and soluble form suitable for absorption and assimilation. The enzymes (biocatalyst) are responsible for degradation of complex is also defined as hydrolysis of complex food.
The food that animals eat provide them energy to carry on various vital activities such as muscle contraction , locomotion, circulation, digestion etc.Food provides materials for growth and synthesis of body substances .The food consists six essential parts, namely, carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, mineral salts, and water. The main bulk of food of animals comprises of carbohydrates , proteins and fats which are required for energy and building of body .But vitamins, mineral salts and water are required for body building and regulative action of the body.In addition to these , organic substances like choline , purines, pyrimidines and sterols are also believed as constotuents of food.
