The metals at the top of thereactivity series can be extracted fromtheir ores by electrolytic reduction. For example, sodium, magnesium and calcium are obtained by the electrolysis of their molten chlorides. The metal is deposited at the cathode, whereas, chlorine is liberated at the anode.
