Chromosomes are made of proteins and DNA. They are present in the nuclei of the cells.In sexually reproducing organisms, the gametes undergo meiosis and hence, each gamete contains only half set of chromosomes. When two gametes fuse, the zygote formed contains the full set of chromosomes.Hence, the formation of gametes by meiosis helps to maintain the number of chromosomes in progenies.

the humans usually has 46 chromosomes. male has 46 chromosomes and female has 46 chromosomes. when they reproduce sexually half of their chromosome would go for offspring i.e., 23 chromosomes from male and 26 chromosomes from female would go to the offsprings. so they get 46 chromosome totally. therefore, offspring's and parents of organisms reproducing sexually have same number of chromosomes
