Stratosphere starts around 10 or 20 km high and ends around 40 to 60 km.

The stratosphere is really important because it aims to trap UVs from the sunlight, which are potentially deadly for human beings due to the fact they increase risks of skin cancer. So it acts like a shield.

But the shield isn't perfect, so energy can still come down on Earth.

Once light and other electromagnetic waves from the Sun hit the Earth, they bounce of to the outer space. But the atmosphere, especially the stratosphere, prevents some of them from leaving. That's the greenhouse effect.

Thus the stratosphere also plays a role in the green house effect. Green house effect is crucial in ordre to sustain enough warmth to allow life on Earth.

However, gas such as CO2 released in the atmosphere by mankind prevent light waves from leaving Earth and make light waves bounce back on Earth, increasing the green house effect and increase overall temperature and participating to the global warming.

Answer:

The stratosphere is where you'll find the very important ozone layar. The ozone layer helps protect us from UV radiation from the sun. ln fact, the ozone layer absorbed most of the UV radiation the sun sends to us. Life as we know it wouldn't be possible without this layer protection.
