Today, more focus is given to web based development compared to monolithic local development. The reuse concept is also becoming increasingly popular. Users can use the web to access any kind of information and purchase whatever they want. Thus, software developers have become responsible for developing e-commerce systems.

Software systems used to be proprietary, built for specific clients and run on the clients own hardware, in their own own facility. There were no server farms and the only way data was shared via FTP, or similar file transfer. The biggest corporations, had multiple offices, and a 3 tired hierarchy. PC's at the bottom, mini - computers in each office and a mainframe at headquarters. An overworked MIS department tried to manage all the disparate databases and software.
Now it is easier,to forget the hierarchy and put all the data in a corporate cloud online and manage it through integrated software packages.
