A ”caring “mother begins long before birth of a child to develop her ability to care.

There are differences of opinion about the definitions of care, but the meaningfulness of care is more inclusive of a whole picture of providing comfort needs, love and support, understanding social and emotional development of a child and need for safety. Mothers are the first nutritionist, teacher and nurse of a child, they are music teacher, coach and transportation. A caring person makes a caring mother. It has nothing to do with age. Young mothers with proper environment are as natural in instinctual care as middle-aged mothers.

Having said this, it takes a community to raise a child. A caring mother is a caring grandmother who encourages and supports her children as parents of their children. This includes help with clothing, cooking and parenting from an elder point of view. A caring grandmother supports her children to have individual time with each grandchild by taking their turn. Grandchildren bask in extra love, and a caring grandmother will encourage love between grandchildren and their parents in a supportive respectful way. When anyone is ill, grandmother can advise, and contribute.

I believe I had a rare blessing to know all of my grandparents and great grandparents. Their care of me was never less than pure love and kindness. Caring fathers, grandfathers and greatgrandfathers must belong to this whole picture. Without them, the support system overburdens a mother and causes imbalance of need and suffering. Lack of male parent and grandparent support and community care stresses a mother to be in a survival mode rather than a safe cozy nest .

Good government all around is an integral part of the greater picture where a family is created and expected to prosper. Without all of the above elements a mother will struggle and most likely sacrifice her own wellbeing for her children.
