periodic table tells us the atomic number that constitutes the number of protons. as the number of protons are equal to number of electrons. hence, indirectly it tells about the electronic configuration.
for number of shells
atomic number will be equally distributed in shells like K, l, M., n, o, p etc. so we will get shells
