Explanation:

White light is called as white because it consists of seven colors. The sunlight splits into seven colors namely violet, indigo, blue, green, orange, and red. We usually call it as VIBGYOR. When we mix all these colors we just get one light which is the WHITE light.

=>White light is a mixture of different wavelengths of light.

=> All of these wavelengths of light travel with the same speed in a transparent gaseous medium like air.

=> But, when they enter another medium like glass or water, the wavelengths of light begin to travel with different speeds.

=> This causes them to separate and now we observe the seven different colours of light, namely, Violet, Indigo, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Red.

=> As the different wavelengths of light present mixed in white light travel with different speeds in a medium other than air, they get separated to to give rise to individual colours.
