Extratropical storms or mid-latitude cyclones (also known as Western Disturbances), originating in the areas around the Mediterranean Sea, causes sudden rain during winter, in north-western India. The moisture in these storms are from the Mediterranean Sea or the Atlantic Ocean and carried in the upper atmosphere. When it encounters the Himalayas in the Indian sub-continent, it is shed as rain.

This winter rain is important for the Rabi crop of wheat, in India.
