by keeping a substance in strong magnetic field which can b created by keeping strong magnets.

u need a substance such as iron ,nickel, cobalt ,etc then place these in between two strong magnets aligning their poles first and then leave it for some time. this can create a magnet but only for some time.

To make a compass:-
Take a needle and take a magnet and take a thread.
Now take the magnet and the needle and run the needle on the magnet without changing the sides of the needle.
This will make the needle magnetized and needle will become a weak magnet.
Now take the thread and tie it on the middle of the needle and tie the other end of the thread to any stable object.
The needle will point towards the North/South direction.
(Note: Take a thin thread that does not oppose it's change in shape.
