Emigration means to leave one's native land and settle elsewhere. Immigration means to adapt another place as one's native.

  • This is also the major difference between these two terms. When a person 'emigrates' from his own native country, to settle at another place, he is known as an 'Immigrant' in that adopted place.
  • Large scale emigration may result in lowering of population whereas large scale immigration may result in a surge in population of that country.
  • Another term associated with 'emigration' and 'immigration' is 'Migration'. The term 'Migration' is an umbrella term which covers both emigration and immigration.
