RELAY PROTECTION COORDINATION……  Relay Protection Coordination means that downstream devices (breakers/fuses) should activate before upstream devices.This minimizes the portion of the system affected by a fault or other disturbance. At the substation level, feeder breakers should trip before the main breaker.

Relay coordination is an important aspect in the protection system design as coordination schemes must guarantee fast, selective, and reliable relay operation to isolate the power system faulted sections.

Thus the relay coordination problem is formulated, for a real time distribution system is simulated using ETAP.

Relay setting

The pickup points and time-dial settings are selected so that the relay can perform its desired protective function.

For an overcurrent relay, the goal is that when a fault occurs on the system, the relay nearest the fault should operate.
