Explain in a 150-word essay how you think the stereotypes created by the actions of people like John Brown and characters in popular readings like Uncle Tom's Cabin helped promote the coming of war.
Answers
Answer:
All these stereotypes contributed to the coming of war by bringing attention to the tension that already existed between Northerners and Southerners. Uncle Tom's Cabin had strong effects on attitudes towards African Americans and slavery in the US. It vividly dramatized the experience of slavery and Stowe made her case against slavery by cataloging the suffering experienced by enslaved people and portrayed their owners as 'morally broken'. Uncle Tom's Cabin helped to humanize slavery in the USA and without this touching portrayal slavery would have continuted to be normalized with just testiments to attest the atrocities of slavery. This being said, many southerners believed that slavery in 'Uncle Toms Cabin' was depicted in a negative light with did not reflect reality. On the other hand Northerners were shocked to discover how creul this problem was, which allowed the abolitionist movement to gain more force. Thus, the problems between the North and South increased, promoting the coming of war.
