Extraction of metals is done by various methods. It depends upon the type of ores. Basically ores are of Sulphide and Carbonates.

Sulphide ores are extracted by heating with excess Oxygen, which is known as roasting.

Carbonate ores are extracted by heating with limited supply of Oxygen, which is known as Calcination.
