The first form of recognizable democracy originated in Athens in ancient Greece, in the 5th century BC.
This innovation became popular and was adopted by a number of other City states in Greece as well.
However not all members of the society were allowed to vote.
Only males who were adults and native residents of the city got the chance of voting, whereas women and non native residents didn't get the chance to vote.
