India's population groth rate was higher till 1971.

The rate of population is now declining .

This doesn't mean that the population is decreasing.

It shows that the growth is lesser than the previois decade.

This indicates that the birth rate is decreasing.

But on the contrary the death rate is also decreasing.

Thus the overall population increases.

Therefore, though the growth rate of population in India is decreasing the population is increasing.
