I am considering it to be a non-academical open minded question so I am giving a general answer.
A Diamond is a very precious stone and gold is a very precious metal which is used by most of the people in the world. Using gold and diamonds has its own sentimental and social values in the society. They are carved in different shapes and models to be worn by the people. However, to be carved into a beautiful ornament, the gold and diamonds have to go through a lot of heating and get slaughtered by the hammer. Finally, they get molded into a beautiful ornament.
Similarly, a person goes through a lot of hardships to become a more experienced person who can stand up for any situation and face any kind of difficulties. Only when a person gets hammered by circumstances, he will learn the pros and cons of a situation and will learn how to deal with it and not make such mistakes later on in life. So, getting slaughtered like the gold and the diamonds will only make a person a better human.
