Importance of wetlands are as follows:

1. High productivity- It is a fertile farmland and grows many important crops, one of them being rice. Also, several economically important fish species are harvested here.

2. Controls pollution- Significant reduction in heavy metals, nitrates and phosphorus have been found.

3. Controls flood- They take up water coming from the tides or flooding rivers, thereby saving the other areas.

4. Home to endangered species- Huge number of shellfish, mammals, songbirds survive here due to its unique location.

5. Reduce storm and wind waves- It controls the storm surge and also wind waves. The mangrove trees, for example, helps to minimise the impact of such waves.

6. Tourism- Wetlands are spots providing recreational activities for tourists such as biking, bird watching, hiking and many more.
